A new threat for Clark? "Yes. There's going to be a new threat to Clark," Gough teased in the TV Guide Online interview. "It may tie in with Christopher Reeve's character, Dr. Swann. We're talking to Chris and trying to make that happen. He's just been very busy; he's directing a film and he's doing an animated film."

In last season's finale, Clark was enticed by a Kryptonian girl, Kara, who had been sent to bring him home. After being pulled violently into the cave wall, Clark was trapped in a phantom zone. As Season Four begins, Clark seems to have resurfaced in Smallville, but is it really Clark or his alter ego, the emotionless Kryptonian Kal-El? Breaking the show's long-standing rule, "No Flights, No Tights," Clark/Kal-El will soar up into the sky for the very first time. Continuing the tradition of introducing well-known characters from the Superman mythology, Clark will also encounter the speedster known as The Flash and answer the longtime question who is the fastest teen alive.
Clark's world is turned upside-down as another landmark moment happens this season: The introduction of Lois Lane (sparkling newcomer Erica Durance). Expect the unexpected, when Lois' quick wit and dazzling beauty catch Clark totally off-guard. While someday Lois and Clark will be the perfect match - as teenagers, they are oil and water, much in the same way Smallville has successfully surprised everyone by making Lex and Clark - future arch-enemies - the best of friends. Clark and Lois are forced to work together as they seek out the true fate of Lois' cousin Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack, 7th Heaven), who died tragically in last season's startling season finale.
The guardians of Clark's secret identity have always been his adoptive parents, Jonathan (John Schneider, The Dukes of Hazzard, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman) and Martha Kent (Annette O'Toole, Superman III, 48 Hrs.). In the aftermath of the meteor shower, they discovered his crashed spacecraft in a cornfield and took him in as their own. Last season, Jonathan put his life on the line for his deal with Clark's real father, Jor-El, and now has to pay the consequences.
Jonathan will also struggle with the idea that Clark is becoming more independent every day and no longer needs him the way he used to. For Martha, the months of uncertainty with Jonathan in the hospital and Clark trapped in the phantom zone, only served to strengthen her character. While Jonathan has the farm and Clark is busy with high school, Martha will look for a passion of her own.
Last season, the knowledge that his life is out of control forced Clark to keep the girl he loves, Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk, Snow White), at arm's length. Lana finally escaped to Paris, where she met a handsome stranger named Jason Teague (Jensen Ackles, Dawson's Creek, Dark Angel) and soon fell in love. However, mysterious events draw her back to Smallville, and she arrives in her hometown with a newfound confidence and a sophisticated new look. Unable to be separated from Lana, Jason follows her from Paris to Smallville. When he takes a job as assistant coach of the football team, Jason and Lana will have to keep their relationship a secret from everyone - and, in particular, Clark.
Over the years, Clark has forged a remarkable relationship with Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum, Sweet November, Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane), though neither has an inkling of how their destinies will ultimately collide. Last season, Lex came to believe he was poisoned and left for dead by this father, Lionel Luthor (John Glover, Batman and Robin). Lex used all his power to put his father behind bars, and now he is determined to make sure that his father suffers and rots in prison while he takes over as head of LuthorCorp. Despite Clark's current distrust in him, Lex is eager to make amends and regain Clark's friendship. Even so, Lex is steadily continuing on the path from good to evil.
By now, Lionel has come to share Lex's obsession with Clark Kent and both father and son will carry on their relentless pursuit to discover the truth about Clark. Lionel will do whatever it takes to get out of prison and exact revenge on those who put him there, especially his own son. Lionel's vast power makes it possible for him to operate from the inside until he is released.

Allison Mack spilled what she could: "I think we established this last year that Lois Lane has no interest in journalism, but she is related to Chloe. We're cousins, but the only two people that we had growing up. It's a very tight relationship. So, when her cousin disappears, Lois, being the ambitious, hardheaded woman that she is, takes it into her own hands to come in and solve the mystery. At the Comic Con International in San Diego on July 24, during both the Smallville panel and at a Q and A with press after the autograph signing, Allison Mack kept speaking of Smallville in the past tense as though her time on the series is over. However, don't be alarmed - we do think this is a ruse, especially considering Chloe's presence in Season 4 scripts.

Kristin Kreuk was interviewed at Sci Fi Wire and revealed the following tidbits:
Lana will get a totally new look, which promises "no more tight jeans and pink t-shirts."
About Season 4, and working with Jensen Ackles as Jason, Lana's new boyfriend: "it's so fun to laugh and to be giggly and to be confident and to walk down the street and to just be in her right now, because she's in a great time in her life. So I'm actually really excited. And the mythology this year will be really interesting. Really interesting. I don't know exactly where they're going, but even in the first episode, [there's] this whole big Egyptian theme I think is going to start coming into the show."

We just saw the first scene with Lois and Clark today. They had incredible chemistry. So, it seems like it's a really different season. We're looking forward to it. It's graduation, it's the last year in high school. We see a transformation with Clark. Clark becomes from Clark the geek to a really popular kid; high school quarterback. So, for us, I guess the theme of this season is graduation."

"We're going to introduce a whole new mythology to the series," Miles Millar told us. "So we get away from the cave, and Jor-El, and have a whole new one, which will be set up in Episode One," Al Gough added.
"I'll say for those Superman fans, they're going to get it pretty quickly, but there's also going to be a really good mythology that actually includes Lana and Lex. She's involved as well. It leads towards the season finale in a really cool way," Millar said.
"I think you're going to see Smallville get a little lighter, have a little more humor in it. I think Lois Lane's really given us a spark plug in the show that we needed. We're going to see Clark becoming more hopeful and embracing his destiny, and not running away from it. And I think we're going to have a lot more fun, and deal with a lot more teen issues, and sort of deal head on, including Clark's sexuality," Al said. "Not his sexual preference, but, whether or not he can have it."

In a reversal of the show's original "no flights, no tights" edict, Smallville executive producer Miles Millar confirmed to SCI FI Wire that star Tom Welling will be seen flying in the upcoming fourth-season premiere—but not in a way viewers might expect. "He doesn't fly as Clark. He flies as Kal-El," Millar said in an interview at The WB's fall press preview in Los Angeles. "The first episode is all about visualizing the internal fight between Clark and Kal-El. Clark Kent represents his Earth-bound persona, the kid who was brought up by the Kents. And Kal-El represents the person that Jor-El wants him to be. This personifies that." As he has in each of the three previous seasons, Clark will discover a new power this year. But despite the instance in the season premiere, Millar insists, "it's not flight." As fans of the comic book know, that leaves few possibilities. So will cold breath be next? "It might be," Millar said. "There aren't many powers left." This season will focus on Clark's senior year of high school and will move toward a big revelation toward the end, Millar hinted. "Clark Kent, at the end of this year, will really graduate," he said. "And we're introducing a whole new mythology as well that will involve Lana, Lex and Clark. And at the end of the season we pay off something that is huge in the Superman mythology. It all leads towards something. WB executives David Janollari, Brad Turrell, and Garth Ancier had a few tidbits to reveal at the WB's 2004 Summer Press Tour. Among them:
"Lois Lane, played by [newcomer] Erica Durance, makes her debut," Turrell told the press. "Kristin Kreuk will get a complete makeover... And to top it off, Tom Welling's character will fly for the first time." But wait. Keep reading.
Garth Ancier reveals a spoiler that we're not too sure about. He says that Lex Luthor and Lois Lane will not meet on Smallville, because the two characters will first meet as adults (in the proposed "Superman" movie). Of course, they also said "no flights..."
So what's this about going back on the "no flights, no tights" policy? "The way I understand it, it will be Tom Welling flying, but the actual character will be Kal-El, who is bad Clark," Ancier said. But wait. Aren't they the same person?

Despite the reason for Lois coming to town, we do not think Chloe is gone from the show. She may be gone for a few episodes, though.

A new possibly ongoing character is coming to Smallville. The character is Jason Teague, an American college junior who is "charming, broad-shouldered," and will definitely serve to open Lana up a little bit. The two of them meet in Paris, and he may be coming back to the "leafy little hamlet" with her. They have a great time in Europe, racing through the Alps on a motorbike, seeing the Notre Dame, and more. (Oh, and those of you who are snarking that it'll be on a Vespa and not a real motorbike - go to the head of the class!)

Apparently Lex is going to come visit Lana in Europe. Guess that means he'll be okay ;) "I feel like I'm not the person he said goodbye to. I've changed so much," Lana says. One might even be able to gleam that over the summer Lana had developed some feelings for him.

All indicators imply that all seven of the show's regular cast will survive the finale cliffhangers... unless, of course, they're trying to trick us! How they'll pull this off is anyone's guess!

Series creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have confirmed in several media articles that Lois Lane and "a new boyfriend for Lana" will be coming to Smallville, confirming the news first posted on KryptonSite weeks ago.

A casting call has gone out to agents for the role of Lois Lane, a "recurring guest star for the first four episodes" of Season Four.
The breakdown describes Lois as "Caucasian, smart, beautiful, urban, headstrong, and no-nonsense." It says she was an Army kid who moved around every two years. She lost her mother at a young age and helped to raise her young sister, which made her mature beyond her years.
Her father, Sam Lane, is a "high-ranking general" in the U.S. Army. Lois has no room for small talk or superstition, and she has a long history of defying her father and asserting her independence.
The breakdown says that Sam always wanted a son rather than a daughter and thus raised Lois to be hard as nails, like a perfect soldier. Lois hides her vulnerability with sarcasm and wit... much like her cousin, Chloe.
At this point in her life, Lois is in her early twenties and has no interest in journalism. She's in Smallville to investigate the death of Chloe. (Seeing that Allison Mack is on the cast list for Season Four, and seeing that they are casting for an actress for Lois, it's our guess that Chloe's really not dead....)
Breakdowns have also gone out for the role of Jason Teague, who is in his early 20's and "incredibly handsome and sexy." He was raised a rich kid in Metropolis. He likes to escape to far away places every summer, and this time it happens to be Paris. "Jason is the guy everyone wants as his best friend," the breakdown says. Jason is a football player who is always looking to spite his parents. He's currently pursuing a degree in education at Metropolis University. Jason could be from a Caucasian or Latino background, and the role is a "series regular."

Tom Welling told reporters at The WB Upfront that everyone will be returning, except for Sam Jones III, who may show up from time to time in guest spots.

Michael Rosenbaum talked to SCI FI Wire about Lex Luthor's potential journey into evil. "The great part is that fans embrace the character," he said. "He's not just going from good to bad right away. It's the journey to try and prevent the inevitable."

Michael also confirmed that Lex will be taking a darker path. "Lex is just trying to stay focused and do the right thing," Rosenbaum said. "But he keeps going and drifting off. The powers that be—one of them being his father [John Glover as Lionel Luthor]—just push him further and further to the dark side. That's where they're heading. People always say, 'Oh, what's going to happen with Lex? We saw a little sparkle in his eye.' There's always that, and there's always finding out the truth. I think the finale is very important."

Tom Welling appeared on some news stations on May 18 to talk about Season 4. In the brief clip, Tom talked about Season 4 having "a new love interest," "a new power," and of course, Clark and Lex's friendship taking a turn.

An interview with actor Michael McKean online at USAToday.com said this: "McKean is set to appear as Edna through September, before joining the cast of the WB series Smallville, which includes his wife, Annette O'Toole." Unfortunately, though, it seems the interviewer misunderstood. While Michael will likely be returning as Perry White, there are currently no known arrangements for him to be a regular on Smallville... even though it WOULD be a great idea!

When asked if there will be any scenes of father and daughter together in the last third of the season, Mack replies, "I hope so! I mean, they're playing up our relationship so much in the last couple of episodes, especially. It's been all about Chloe and her dad, and how important her dad is to her. I know that they have some huge plans for the season finale for Robert and me, so I'm sure we'll see him around in the next—I can't believe we only have three episodes left in this season! They work so hard—they work all of us so hard, these last three episodes will all be worth it I think. Because they have to bring all of our story lines up to a climax so there's a cliff-hanger at the end." Mack promises the final six episodes will be chock full of surprises, as well as meaty story lines for her character. [...] "SMALLVILLE is such a huge undertaking, though. I don't know if people understand. It's a miniature movie. It's huge. We always have at least two days of second unit with just massive stuff. For example in this last episode [we shot], I'm in a car and somebody hits me and I get pushed over a bridge and my car is teetering on the bridge. And Clark catches the car and pulls it up, and pulls me out, and I'm passed out and [he's worried] I'm dead. And he stabs me with a needle on adrenaline and revives me—it's a PULP FICTION moment. E! News Live caught up with Tom Welling, Sam Jones III, and Annette O'Toole on Monday night, and came across some details previously unrevealed about the show's future - the cast of Smallville may be a little different when the show returns for Season 4. "They let me in on a few of the ideas and there's a few people leaving the show and there's a few people coming back and there's some people whose characters disappear," Tom told the show. Sam Jones III also commented on this. "Not everybody's coming back to Smallville next year," he told the show. Source: KryptonSite

After the main characters are done with high school, the show could follow the "WB formula" and send them to college. "But by the time he goes to Metropolis, the series will end," the producers say.

In a recent TV Guide interview, Al Gough reveals that they would like to incorporate some of those other characters from the DC comics. They would like to have Bruce Wayne appear as well as Perry White, Jimmy Olsen and potentially Lois Lane. The latter will more than likely not appear until season 4. The interview confirms that Lois Lane is Chloe's cousin. Source: TV Guide Online
